From idea to business-for public health and welfare. A large part of the innovation system at Karolinska Institutet is managed through Karolinska Institutet Holding AB.
Karolinska Institutet places great value on a dynamic interaction between the academic and the commercial sectors – for mutual benefits and general improvement for the whole society.
To enable professional evaluation, development and commercialization of interesting innovations in Life Science and Medical Technology an overall system of innovation has been created – KI Innovation.
This unique system develops research ideas from both Swedish and other Nordic universities.
Some of the main tasks for KIHAB is to manage stocks in research-and development companies, establish joint ownership in promising enterprises, offer good infrastructure for newly started companies and to provide administrative, legal and financial services.
Karolinska Institutet Holding AB, creates the possibility for KI to act commercially. This means that KIHAB can take risks and also is allowed to make profits – as opposed to state-owned Karolinska Institutet.
KIHAB operates mainly through the wholly owned subsidiary companies:
- Karolinska Institutet Innovations AB
- Karolinska Institutet Science Park AB
- Karolinska Institutet Housing AB
KIHAB owns 5,6 percent of the shares in the investment company Karolinska Development AB, which has a portfolio of around 10 companies in the Life Science sector.
